Um projecto dividido em duas partes. A primeira: Ilustrar a capa, contracapa, badanas e guardas de uma antologia de contos, bem como criar uma ilustração e capitular para um desses contos. A segunda: fazer o design do próprio livro.
Os contos de Mário-Henrique Leiria remetem ao imaginário, ao surreal, pelo que quis criar uma linguagem ilustrativa que respondesse a esse tom narrativo.
Para tal usei elementos de várias histórias, e escolhi uma palete de cores muito reduzida, criando um contraste rico e que invoca uma sensação de alienação.
One project divided in two parts. The first: illustrating a front and back cover, book flaps and end-papers for a short-story anthology, as well as creating a full illustration and capitulate for one of the short-stories. The second: to do the interior design for the whole book.
Mário-Henrique Leiria's short-stories take the reader to the imagery, the surreal, and because of this I wanted to create an illustration language which worked on those themes. For this I used elements from several stories and I chose a restricted colour palette , creating a rich and evocative contrast, and a feeling of alienation.

Para o interior, e tendo em conta que a maioria dos contos eram pequenos, muitos deles com apenas uma página, quis usar elementos gráficos que preenchessem o vazio, sem se sobreporem ao texto. Agilizando e modificando tanto a direção destes elementos, como do próprio título de cada conto.
Houve necessidade da criação de uma grelha versátil, que se adaptasse tanto aos textos em prosa, como em poesia, aos longos e aos mais curtos. Foi um desafio enriquecedor.
For the book interior, and taking into account that most of the stories were short, many taking up only a page, I wanted to use graphic elements which filled a bit of the void, without overtaking the text itself. Switching and rotating the position and direction of these elements and of the stories' titles. There was a need to create a versatile grid, which adapted to both narrative texts and poems, as well as long and short stories. It was a challenge.
Para a continuidade da imagética da capa, usei a ideia de janelas que se abrem para vários mundos, e segui a mesma linha na criação das badanas. Enquanto nas guardas uma das janelas se mantém aberta, ao "fechar" a badana, fechamos também o acesso ao mundo exterior, e viceversa.
For the continuity of the cover's imagery, I used the idea of windows that open up to numerous worlds, and I followed this same idea in the creation of the front and back flaps. Whilst in the end-papers, one of the windows remains open, as you "close" the flaps, so you close the windows, and vicecersa.
A ilustração central é uma interpretação do conto "O pôr-do-sol", que fala de um escritor solitário numa cabana, usei uma metafóra do seu estado de espírito, e trabalhei as formas e as cores, estudando cada elemento para ter um significado para além do próprio texto.
For the center illustration, which is an interpretation of the short-story "The sunrise", which portrays a lonely writer in a cabin, I used a metaphor of his state of mind, working both forms and colour, studying each element to have a meaning beyond the text itself.
